Migrating Microsoft 365 email: the state of play

Microsoft has switched off password access to Microsoft 365 and Outlook.com. What does that mean for your migration — and what does work?

Why signing in with an (app) password no longer works

Microsoft phased out classic password sign-in for mail programs: for Microsoft 365 business accounts in early 2023, for Outlook.com in September 2024. App passwords for mail stopped working with it.

This is a security measure by Microsoft and applies to every service that wants to reach your mailbox with a password — not just emailmover.

What this means for your migration

A Microsoft 365 or Outlook.com mailbox cannot be used as source or target at the moment. We are building a secure connection that signs you in directly with your Microsoft account; that will make it possible again — without passwords.

Moving between other providers (Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, hosting packages)? Nothing changes: those work as always.

Need to get mail out of Microsoft right now?

If you cannot wait there is the manual route: export to a PST file in Outlook and import it into your new environment. Laborious and error-prone, but possible.

Rather wait for the connection? Keep an eye on this page — we will also announce it in the app once it works.
